"You know...I rap!" is a phrase that every Hip Hop fan is both excited by and dreads. You see, in the Hip Hop community everyone thinks they can rap. We dread this, because it means we are about to listen to their song and it might be wack. At the same time it makes us excited because we hope (against hope) that the music is going to be dope.
This happens to Hip Hop bloggers even more. We get tweets asking where to submit music, or telling us to check them out. One day after church, I went out to lunch with a visitor named Ray Brown. At lunch we began talking about Christian Hip Hop, and then he said it...
"I do Christian Hip Hop."
Of course he had his headphones with, so I asked him to play a song. This was the song he played.
This was one of those times that I was excited to hear the song he played. This dude can rap! The joint was crazy! The beat comes on hard, his flow is nice and the word play is crazy. The theme of Christians be the "Bad Guy" when they share the gospel is completed in verse three as he reminds us who became the "Bad Guy" for us.
"They try to tell me that God was really an alien
With souls bound by depravity, Just a slave within
But Jesus the savior, graciously paid the wage of sin
So people like them could be saved the day they put they faith in Him
I pray He take them in
Pray that they repent
Trade they sin, stray from they ways
And then let His grace extend
You can still come up, out the grave,
And forget your past.
He volunteered to be the bad guy on your behalf"
After he hit me with that song, I was like, "Ray, your song is crazy, where can I get more music." He told me is stage name is Zero and he is part of a Christian Hip Hop group called the Insurgents. I immediately went home and check them out on soundcloud (In_Surge_nts) and listened to as many songs as I could find.
Insurgents has a great sound. Louie, Mike and Zero all bring something different to the group. Zero shines on the hooks and lyrically he kills every verse. Louie brings energy and bravado, and Mike, consistent flow and flavor. Together they make a team that is worth listening to.
Looking forward to New Music
Zero and I became friends and sat down together before he left for his next assignment. His Christ-centered focus and single-minded devotion to God has given him a boldness that few have. I am excited about everything this guys creates. Keep an I on this young man and his crew.
The Insurgents are working on a mixtape to be released in 2014.
